Van Walleghem's path to Truth and Reconciliation

Last week the students at Van Walleghem participated in Truth and Reconciliation events. Students crafted hand-made signs expressing sadness for what happened and hope that we will make up for our past wrongs.

Those messages were hung from trees, planted on either side of a sidewalk (making it a literal path to Truth and Reconciliation) and put in the ground around a giant kettle in memory of Rooster Town.

Those that wanted to participated in a group smudge before walking along the path and reading the heartwarming notes.

The giant kettle you see in the video holds as much water as was carried - by hand - to the residents of Rooster Town each and every day.

Collectively it took 150,000 steps to walk to the kettle from Van Walleghem; tragically, that’s the number of children sent to residential schools over two centuries.

It is evident that Van Wallegham is committed to reconcili-ACTION.

Congratulations to the students and staff for putting on such a powerful and poignant day!
