Pembina Trails Student Voice Unite

It has been said, “Student voice is giving students the ability to influence learning to include policies, programs, context and principals.” In Pembina Trails, we value student voice and encourage our young people to take part.

For the second time this school year, students from across Pembina Trails gathered for the Student Voice Unite forum. The energy in the room was undeniable. Grade 6 to 12 students took the time to share views, listen to different perspectives and ultimately build community.

The spring focus themes were:

•Truth and Reconciliation
•Diversity
•Safe, Caring and Inclusive Schools
•Mental Health
•Social Media/Digital Citizenship

Students had the opportunity to watch a spoken word performance by local activist, Janine Brown and learn more about cyber safety and digital citizenship from our School Resource Officers and General Byng School students. Another highlight was a presentation by writer and activist, Dr. Niigaan Sinclair. The University of Manitoba professor spoke about understanding Truth and Reconciliation.  His message resonated with General Byng student, Bernard.

“Around the world there is a lot of trouble. Niigaan talked about Indigenous people not having many rights. I think equality is good and it makes things peaceful,” said Bernard.

It was grade 5 student, London’s, second Student Voice Unit event. The 11-year-old says she always leaves feeling empowered to make a change in her school and community.

“I joined more clubs like the earth club and we try to help with the environment. I used to be shy and now I get out there. Voices makes me not want to hide, but to keep it up. And if it feels this good, why wouldn’t I want to do more?”

The group meets a few times a year. The next forums are set for November 7, 2018 and May 1, 2019.
