The three sisters art

Students at Ralph Maybank have been busy creating art with a historical twist.

Inspired by the story of the three sisters, each class has had the chance to work with beans, corn and squash.

According to Iroquois legend, corn, beans and squash are three inseparable sisters who only grow and thrive together. This tradition of interplanting was widespread among Native American farming societies.  The idea was that this method offered a sustainable system that provided nutrition for generations.

“There are numerous versions of this story told by different communities and nations,” shared Allison Moore, Pembina Trails Visual Arts Consultant.  “Essentially the story tells us of the importance of relationships. We are using all sorts of art materials and techniques to create books, giant turtles and vegetable prints. The kids are doing some beautiful work.”
