South Winnipeg new schools FAQ

We appreciate the community feedback regarding the catchments for our new schools in South Winnipeg. Our board and senior administration welcomed community members at an information session in late November. For anyone who could not attend the session, we created a web feature as well as the FAQ below to help answer other possible inquiries.

 

Q: What are the day care plans?

We understand the important role child care centres play for our young families. While, we often share learning spaces, day cares are not operated by Pembina Trails. Schools in Manitoba are not permitted to operate child care centres.

We have been planning to include daycare spaces as part of our schools. Recently, the province has informed us that they have a preference to construct the daycare as a detached facility on a campus location yet to be determined. We have been assured by the province that they remain committed to funding and building the daycare. 

 

Q: Will the new K-8 school be French Immersion?

The school located on “Area B” will offer English programming. Looking ahead, the province has announced funding for two additional schools to meet the growing needs of our communities. Our current plan is to have one of these be dual track, offering English and French Immersion education.

 

Q: When will the “Area B” K-8 and the South Winnipeg high school open?

The tender process is expected to begin in the New Year, with shovels in the ground in 2020 and an estimated opening of 2022. The most recent campus rendering can be viewed here.

 

Q: Who can attend the new “Area B” K-8 school?

• Students living in “Area B” will be eligible to attend
• Bridgwater Centre students will be eligible to attend
• Prairie Pointe students living in stages 2,3,4 will attend until new school is built

• Bridgwater Trails students will attend until new school is built.

 

Q: When will this decision on the “Area B” K-8 school catchment be finalized?

Our board is currently considering more community feedback before making a final decision.

Q: What about the new South Winnipeg high school catchment?

Grade 9-12 students living in Waverley West will be eligible to attend. The new high school will also offer vocational programming that will be open to students across Pembina Trails.

Q: Is there an update on the two additional schools in South Winnipeg?

Looking ahead, the province has announced funding for two additional schools to meet the growing needs of our communities. The new schools are as planned:

• K-8 school in Prairie Pointe/Bridgwater Trails
• K-8 school in Bridgwater Lakes
• One of these will be dual track: offering English and French Immersion

 

Q: What is the division’s long-term plan for the growing communities in South Winnipeg?

We will continue to use or add space in existing schools, and have requested the province build:

• Four K-8 schools, each with a capacity of 600 to 800 students 
• One centrally-located high school.

This plan depends on obtaining appropriate parcels of land from the developers and the necessary approvals from the provincial government’s Public Schools Finance Board for the construction and funding of each new school.

It is important to remember that, the province expects school divisions in Manitoba to use existing space available in schools in nearby communities such as Fort Richmond, Richmond West, Waverley Heights, Fort Garry and Whyte Ridge.
