May is Music Month in Manitoba

The Government of Manitoba has issued a proclamation of the month of May 2021 as Music Month in Manitoba.
This acknowledges the significant role of music and the arts throughout history in human culture and community. Music, it says, “is an integral part of our collective human experience,” and this experience is integral to Manitoba schools and the lives of our students.
The proclamation, issued by Cliff Cullen, Minister of Education, further acknowledges that “the creative achievements of students musicians, and the pursuit of beauty, knowledge, and truth as taught by music educators, are worthy of notice and celebration.”
Matt Abraham, program leader for the Performing Arts Department at Institut collégial Vincent Massey Collegiate, welcomes the chance to celebrate music, especially in light of the challenges associated with the pandemic.
“Music allows [students] to recharge, connect and engage a different part of their brain,” he says. “It’s both a creative and collaborative process, which means they get to develop and practice critical skills like empathy, literacy, creativity, resilience, collaborative problem solving, communication, listening, and commitment.”
Abraham’s students echo his sentiments when describing the benefits of Music.

“Music is important to me because it brings people together and it’s a great way for people to connect and express themselves creatively. Whether I’m playing music or just listening, it always makes me happy.”-Margaret McGunigal (Grade 12)
“Music is important to me because it holds the power to inspire people.”-Tegwen Bryan (Grade 12)

“Music offers a sense of community in my life and enables a connection with others through a shared love and interest. Music has taught me many lessons that I can apply to my day-to-day life, and I am endlessly inspired by its capacity to lift spirits and make the world a brighter place.”-Katie Skwarchuk (Grade 12)
Abraham also points out that music gives students an intensely personal voice, a way to communicate that stretches beyond words, and space where students feel heard and valued.
We look forward to seeing all the creative ways that schools across Pembina Trails will celebrate music this month! Please remember to tag us on social media, so that we can share your #MusicMonth moments.
