A musical movement to thank front-line workers

Manitoba’s front-line healthcare workers are getting a daily musical thank you from Pembina Trails students and staff. The movement aims to honour the efforts of those working tirelessly during COVID-19.

According to band teacher Cynthia Weevers, the idea received an enthusiastic response from students when it was mentioned during an online lesson.

“Many have family members who are front-line workers and students were excited to find a way to do their part to thank them using their music,” shared Weevers.

She says planning to play together at the same time everyday gives her students something to look forward to, and motivates them to develop their music independently.

Each night, it seems more students and staff from across Pembina Trails, including Henry G. Izzat Middle School and Pacific Junction School are joining in. 

“When I put the email out asking students to play music outside at 7 p.m. every night, my inbox began to fill up with videos of my students playing,” said Pacific Junction School and Henry G. Izzat Middle School, music teacher, Debra Yacheson.

The entire community is encouraged to take the time to play outside at 7 p.m., any night of the week. It would certainly be incredible to have all 35 Pembina Trails schools participate.
