Kunei
Pembina Trails prides itself on creating relationships in our community and even across the globe.
Each summer since 1997, our International Student Program has welcomed students from Japan to Winnipeg as part of a partnership called Kunei.
This year, 25 Japanese high school students made the long journey to Pembina Trails to learn more about Canadian culture and practice speaking in English.
During the two week visit, the students live with homestay families and spend half the day in the classroom, the other half exploring our community. The list of activities includes a trip to a strawberry farm, the Canadian Museum for Human Rights and a boat tour at the Forks.
"We notice a lot of improvement. Many students become more comfortable and their English improves. They have the chance to go to a restaurant and use their English to order a meal on their own," shared Brent Poole, International Student Program Director.
Here is what the Kunei students shared about their experience:
- "I love Winnipeg. Canadian people are very friendly. Canada is peaceful. Love my host family. I want to stay with my host family again."
- "I had a good experience and made lots of memories. Everyone was very kind. Thank you for supporting us. I will never forget about the time I came to Winnipeg."
- "I enjoyed laser tag and the go-carts. I had a very good time. Host family was very kind and very fun."
