Alternative High School launched

Students at the Pembina Trails Alternative High School have an unusual view of the world from their classroom situated on the Skydeck at Investor's Group Field, near the University of Manitoba.

The students can enjoy a lunch hour on a sun-filled deck with the view of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers practicing for their next big win. Here, the students can eat, enjoy the weather and practice their armchair coaching skills.

The Alternative High School houses a unique program where students ages 17-20 can earn their final credits to graduate with a high school diploma. The school is based on a strength-based programming model where students can earn the credits necessary to achieve their high school diploma. Programming is designed to take advantage of skills and talents the students already demonstrate while accumulating experiences that allow them to consider new aspects of the world around them.

Through this experience, students can earn a Mature Student High School Diploma or complete their remaining credits for a regular high school diploma. Courses are either taught directly by the teachers in the school or are supported in their learning through online Informnet courses.

To attend this school, students are nominated by their home schools. A total of 50 students can be enrolled to complete their courses at the pace that works best for them. Students benefit from a well-rounded program that includes physical activity, academics and skill building to aid them in future work pursuits.
