FRC Badminton Team wins Fifth Consecutive Provincial Banner - Ranya Narwal captures provincial JV Singles title

Despite missing two years of play due to COVID, badminton play at FRC has been going strong!

After a solid showing at the WWAC league play, several Junior Varsity and Varsity players advanced to Provincials which were held May 3-5th at Prairie Badminton.

The Varsity team shone bright as players-Andrew Gu (boys singles), Rain Zhou (boys singles), Logan Lam/Jeffrey Tan (boys doubles) and Ashwin Chidambara Subhash/Tiffany Cheng (mixed doubles) were all undefeated in their round robin matches. The final results for the FRC Varsity team were as follows: Andrew Gu finished 2nd, Tiffany Cheng & Ashwin Chidambara Subhash- finished 3rd, Rain Zhou finished 4th , Logan Lam & Jeffery Tan- finished 4th. The team was coached by former FRC students Navjot Purba and Arnish Patel.

The talent of the Varsity Team led to another banner win for FRC!  This is the 5th consecutive Provincial banner for the FRC badminton team. An amazing team effort and accomplishment!

Fort Richmond Collegiate Grade 10 student Ranya Narwal dominated at the recent Manitoba High School Athletics Junior Varsity Provincial Championships. Ranya allowed only 36 points to be scored against her in round robin play. and continued her winning streak through to her final match.

Ranya trains six days a week at Prairie Badminton. She competes nationally and is currently ranked in the top 15 Canadian players for U17 girls. Ranya is hoping to qualify for the Canada Games in 2023.

Ranya will be competing at Nationals July 2022 in Edmonton. She has won the last 2 Junior provincials in club badminton, most recently winning a “triple crown” by placing 1st in singles, doubles and mixed doubles.

Her coach Dale Kinley describes her as a hard worker, diligent with her fitness, and dedicated to improving her skills as a badminton player.

Congratulations Ranya!
