Literacy Links facilitators get ready for a busy summer

To ensure even our youngest learners can Accomplish Anything, our Board invests in creative initiatives.

Each summer, we hire facilitators, many who are university students, to visit homes and prepare children who are about to enter kindergarten in the fall. Literacy Links is a free program that started in 2002 and benefits families across our division.

In May, eleven facilitators, some new and many returning, gathered at our administration office on Henlow for training to prepare for summer home visits.

We asked a few, why they wanted to get involved:

"I love being one of the first connections to the school division for our children to help inspire a love of literacy and learning for both the child and their family. The joy that the children show us during our sessions is what fuels my passion as a teacher."

-Hayley Burton, Literacy Links facilitator

"This is my first year in the Literacy Links program! I will be graduating from the University of Manitoba Faculty of Education this coming June. I am actually in the Senior Years stream, focusing on Biology and Math. I have a love for science and learning new and interesting facts about the world. I also love to read mysteries, thrillers and basically, any book I can get my hands on. I love working with students of all ages and am so excited to have the opportunity to learn about literacy and numeracy with an age group I don't usually get to work with."

-Shandra Ready, Literacy Links facilitator
