General Byng School proudly gets benched

Nine Million- that is the number of plastic bags elementary schools in Manitoba have collected since 2008. Students and staff at General Byng School have done their part in Take Pride Winnipeg! and Multi-Material Stewardship Manitoba's Bag Up challenge.

To thank students for their efforts in the challenge, a bench was presented during a recent assembly. General Byng School is one of fourteen schools to receive a bench made of recycled material, including plastic bags, bins and lawn furniture.

The goal of the challenge was to teach students to do more to reduce their waste and consider reusing, recycling and remanufacturing options. Students were asked to collect as many plastic shopping bags as possible and bring them to their school for recycling. All bags collected in the program were recycled right here in Winnipeg.

Take Pride Winnipeg!'s Executive Director Tom Ethans and MMSM's Executive Director Karen Melnychuk thanked students and staff and encouraged them to continue finding ways to make their community a green place to live.

Congratulations General Byng!
