Pembina Trails high school students explore Agricultural Sciences at the University of Manitoba

This spring, a group of enthusiastic high school students from Pembina Trails high schools had the unique opportunity to participate in an internship program at the University of Manitoba's Faculty of Agriculture. The program offered an immersive experience, allowing students to explore various departments and gain hands-on knowledge both on and off campus in the field of agriculture.

Through the Department of Soil Science, students learned about soil health and nutrient management. Students also spent time in the Department of Food Science, where they discovered the intricacies of food production, safety, and innovation. With visits to the Plant Biotechnology department and on-site greenhouses, students were exposed to research in genetic engineering and plant breeding.

A highlight of the internship was the time spent in Glenlea, Manitoba. Here, the students delved into animal science topics, focusing on poultry and swine. They observed the daily operations of a working farm, gaining insights into animal health management, and the latest advancements in livestock production.

Congratulations to all participants for furthering their understanding of agricultural sciences and opening their eyes to the plethora of careers found within this vital field.
