What a night!
There were balloons, games and food. More than 100 families recently gathered for a special evening of learning fun at Ralph Maybank School.
“It was a great community event that made me feel so proud of Ralph Maybank,” shared principal Andrea Loepp. “Teachers had a chance to connect with students and families and show them games that we use to teach and practice reading and math skills. Families enjoyed the games together in a celebratory way and it was a very positive experience for all. One parent shared how ‘everything was perfect from the organization, the games, the set up, the food, and most importantly, the smiling faces on all involved’.”
The Family Games Night was geared towards kindergarten to grade 3 students. This evening was a wonderful way to give parents and guardians a chance to see firsthand how their young ones can enjoy learning through play. Literacy and numeracy games can often provide extra opportunities for students to practice their skills, interact socially, improve their learning and have some fun at the same time.
“It is awesome,” said grade 3 student Karma while playing a game of Guess Who with her mom.
“It is hard to play at home sometimes. I am a single mom, so this is really nice to make time for fun together. I love this school,” shared Karma’s mother, Vanessa Wright.
Ralph Maybank took the lead on this event connecting with community resource partners, The Healthy Child Coalition, The Winnipeg Public Library, South Winnipeg Family Information Center, Neighbourhood Immigrant Settlement Workers and the Winnipeg Regional Health Authority. Families had the chance to learn more about these community partners by stopping in at booths set up in the school’s gymnasium.
