No experience was necessary. By the end of the day, the students who took part in Coding Quest were well on their way to becoming serious coders.

Coding Quest is a program based on the Manitoba curriculum. Students in grades 4, 5 and 6 from across the division attended a fun filled day aimed to develop a better understanding and passion for coding. The annual event focuses on Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) education, while incorporating learning skills, language arts, visual arts and social studies. This year, educators from a number of Pembina Trails schools also participated in some professional development where the focus was learning how to use the Coding Quest program in their classrooms.

“We are all learners, sums up our day of coding with both teachers and students,” shared Pembina Trails Library Learning Commons Consultant Jo-Anne Gibson. “Sometimes students were the teachers and sometimes teachers led the way. We all worked together as a community of learners to help each other learn the basics of Scratch coding.  The students who participated will go back to their classrooms as coding leaders. They will help their classmates build their coding skills and encourage their teachers to continue to find ways to integrate coding in a meaningful way into the curriculum.  Teachers learned the basics of coding and came away with ideas on how to integrate it into various subjects.”

We would like to thank all our staff who worked to make this innovative event a great success.
