Do you know the rules?

There is nothing more important than the safety of our students. Which is why bus safety is a huge priority in Pembina Trails School Division. When it comes to bus accidents, statistics show that students are more likely to be injured outside of the bus. Speeding in a school zone or illegally passing a stopped bus increases this risk. Some important facts to remember when driving:

• The front and right side of the bus are the most dangerous – watch for students.

• The fine for passing a bus with flashing red lights in either direction is $655.65 plus two demerits.

• From September to June, Monday to Friday, school zones have a limit of 30km, including holidays. 

Did you know that 18 per cent of Pembina Trails students ride the bus to school? That is 2,547 students, which is more than the combined population of Fort Richmond Collegiate, Vincent Massey Collegiate and the Alternative High School! With so many students getting on and off the bus every day, there are rules in place to keep them safe.

With these safety rules, everyone has a role to play. Even our buses have safety features. They are equipped with:

• Seven mirrors that offer the bus driver a variety of views and reduce blind spots.

• A front crossing arm to guide students into a safe view for drivers.

• Flat, black hoods so sunlight does not reflect into the driver’s eyes.

• Reflective tape on the rear and sides of the bus for maximum visibility.

• Red light and stop sign cameras to report passing cars when the bus is stopped.

“Our bus drivers do a tremendous job keeping our students safe,” says Donna Storoschuk, Director of Transportation. “But there is only so much they can see and everyone must play a role in bus safety. It is the responsibility of the community to know the danger zones and bus safety rules to prevent any accidents or tragedies.”

Parents, it is important to always remind your kids about bus safety. This starts with teaching them the danger zones and where they can walk safely. Teach your kids to:

• Never cross behind the bus.

• Take five big steps away from the bus before walking along the safe zone.

• Always wait for the bus driver’s signal before walking in front of the crossing arm. Look left and right as you cross the road. At an intersection, look in all directions.

• Always cross the road at right angles; do not cut across on an angle.
