Chair Jaime Glenat on living our inclusive values

As 2019 comes at close, we naturally look back at some of the many memorable moments from the past year. In Pembina Trails, we believe in inclusion and are always looking at ways to grow and live our values even more.

During the fall, we invested in a professional development opportunity with inclusion guru, Shelley Moore. Moore is a highly sought after teacher, researcher, consultant and storyteller. She has worked with educators and community organizations throughout both Canada and the United States.

More than 1,400 teachers, educational assistants, clinicians administrators, senior administrators and trustees had the opportunity to learn more about what inclusion means in today’s classrooms and how to continue our work building inclusive communities where all students belong.

Pembina Trails School Division Chair of the Board, Jaime Glenat, set the stage for an inspiring day by giving an empowering introduction.

“Every day I am marvelled by your dedication and hard work,” said Glenat. “I hear about it at the board table and I see it in my daughters’ schools.  I have witnessed, as have my colleagues on the board, time and time again examples of individuals rising to challenges and doing exemplary work in our schools with our students. I know that this is no exception, and I look forward to hearing about your challenges and successes in your individual journeys of inclusion.”

Glenat went on to invite staff to look carefully at additional ways where we can improve our inclusive practices to benefit all students saying quote, “Inclusion is a mindset of growth and movement.  It’s a journey.  We are not all in the same place in the journey, but we can all move forward. It’s fantastic that we are known to be an inclusive school division and that philosophically we believe in being inclusive. I believe it is also about what we do on a day-day basis.  Things are constantly evolving and changing, our classrooms are more diverse than ever before, so we need to continue to look for ways to do it better.”

Thanks again to everyone who attend this important day of learning.
