École Charleswood School marks 10 years of CancerCare fundraising
What began as a response to a beloved teacher’s cancer diagnosis has grown into a decade-long tradition of hope, generosity, and remembrance at École Charleswood School.
Ten years ago, teacher librarian Erin Daniels was diagnosed with cancer. After being away from school for a few years, she returned to the school she loved in 2019. This is a testament to Daniels’ character, compassion, and her love for the students and staff. This past year, Daniels unfortunately passed away, but her legacy continues to shape the school in powerful ways.
Daniels’ original diagnosis inspired the launch of the École Charleswood CancerCare Campaign, which has now raised $31,798 over 10 years. The 10th annual campaign alone brought in $7,298 this year through custom t-shirt sales, student–staff dodgeball games, silent auctions, donations, and popular events like paying to throw a pie at a staff member.
On Friday, March 27, students and staff gathered to celebrate the milestone. Former students and founders of the original CancerCare campaign, Paige Michalyshen and Christy Porritt, were on hand, along with Sharon Loewen, Manager of Development at CancerCare Manitoba, who shared a research update and accepted the commemorative cheque.
In honour of Daniels’ lasting impact, the school also officially dedicated the library in her name. A new wall plaque will now stand as a reminder of her courage, kindness, and commitment to education, while ensuring her spirit remains a part of École Charleswood School for years to come.
