International Science Youth Forum in Singapore
In January, two students from Fort Richmond Collegiate participated in the International Science Youth Forum (ISYF) in Singapore. Teachers Heather Teller and Bob Adamson accompanied Tooba Razi and Anna Le to the exciting international conference.
In Singapore, Tooba and Anna had the opportunity to present their own research and spend time with like-minded students from around the world. They also attended speaker sessions with Nobel laureates. FRC was the only school from Canada invited to the forum this year.
Grade 12 student Tooba hopes to pursue an undergraduate degree in microbiology/immunology and continue to research on the side. ISYF gave her the chance to put her work on display and learn from other youth.
Her research aims to derive an alternate, cheaper and more sustainable treatment for Type 2 Diabetes. She developed a potential drug using cinnamon, which proved to be 197 per cent more effective than any current drug on the market.
Anna, a grade 11 student, plans to pursue psychology after graduation. ISYF opened her eyes to how science and technology are advancing in innovation and efficiency.
She is interested in how water quality affects surrounding environments and aquatic ecosystems. She discovered that hormones in birth control pills harm reproduction among fish and can cause entire populations to disappear. This inspired her to study how these hormones affect other aquatic organisms.
For both students, making lifelong connections through a shared passion for science with students from all over the world was the most memorable part of the trip.
