Structural Design Challenge

The engineering design process was put to work during a collaborative grade 2/3/4 structural design challenge. Students were tasked with creating a stable, strong and functional structure in consideration of the challenges the First Nations people faced as they navigated a nomadic lifestyle in the harsh climate of the prairies. Students chose one of two problems, how to cross a river or provide a mobile shelter for a family. Thoughtful problem solving was applied as students selected from a variety of materials and tested their structures with wind, stress and functionality. It was exciting to see students demonstrate resilience as they worked through various design challenges to create effective structures!
