TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES :

There are many incredible travel opportunities for students wanting to improve their language and cultural experiences:

An exchange with students in Laval, France: The interested French Immersion students from Winnipeg will go to Laval, France for ten days in November. Students stay with their exchange families for the first seven days and then visit Paris for the last two nights. They will attend school for an hour each day and will spend the rest of the time doing activities and tours in the local area.  While in Paris, they will visit many of the main tourist sites. In April, the French students will be welcomed here to stay with their exchange families.  While here, our students will be involved with welcoming the students to Oak Park as well as participating in local activities and tours along with their guests.

Hosting a student from Buenos Aires, Argentina: This is a tremendous opportunity for students to learn about culture and diversity, to share their Canadian pride, to establish new friendships, and to learn Spanish. It is also a fantastic way to experience what the hosting part of an exchange program has to offer with the opportunity to apply for some funding towards an independent study abroad experience.  For over a decade, Oak Park has partnered with San Carlos School and has hosted the student group and teachers from this school. During the fourteen day visit in October, the argentines spend several days at the school, attend classes with their hosts, go on excursions in and around Winnipeg and learn about Canadian life. The highlight of the visit is sharing Thanksgiving traditions with their host families.

Outbound Study Abroad Program : The International Student Program host students from all over the world who choose to spend a  semester or high school year abroad. These students bring stories from different places and create opportunities amongst the student population for the breaking down of cultural barriers. The Pembina Trails ISP has in the last 2 years launched an Outbound Program through which it hopes to help facilitate individually initiated study abroad programs for Pembina Trails high school students. This is really about global citizenship and ultimately a more peaceful world. Students in grades 9 – 12 may apply for short or long-term programs in France, Spain, Belgium, Italy, Sweden, Argentina, Germany and Japan. The programs include both an academic and cultural component. Students are hosted by a local family, which brings a higher degree of authenticity to the experience. Funding is available through the International Student Program. All applications will be considered however not all applicants will be selected. Presentations are given at the school in the fall months; applications are due on January 31st for the following school year. Students who apply must be in good academic standing.

Please contact your school International Student Program Teacher Liaison for applications and further details.
