Butterfly Garden

A wonderful partnership was formed last spring between students at École Crane, The Living Prairie Museum and the school's Grounds Transformation Committee to install and maintain a butterfly garden on our school grounds.

The Living Prairie Museum staff were hosted in our Makerspace to educate students about the importance of planting butterfly gardens due to the radical loss of natural habitat for these beautiful and important creatures. The Grounds Transformation Committee stepped in with a generous sponsorship to purchase planters and soil.  Members of this group also participated in installation and planting alongside students.

Before long, monarch larvae were seen munching on milkweed and growing quickly! Students continued to participate in caring for the garden by weeding and watering. Recently, during grounds clean-up, they learned how to protect the plants for the winter by mulching and covering the beds.

This is an exciting, ongoing learning opportunity for our students in environmental stewardship.

Thank you Grounds Transformation Committee and the Living Prairie Museum.
