Visit with Elder Allison Cox

On March 22 and 25, Elder Allison Cox visited Ecole Crane. She met with the students from all three kindergarten classes, Mme Bureau’s grade 4 class, Mme Lessard’s grade 2 class and Mme Bogaert’s (Mme Reis) grade 1 class. The students were fully engaged as Elder Allison shared knowledge about her Indigenous culture. Elder Allison explained about the drum being the heart of mother earth because our earth nurtures and cares for us. She taught us a child’s song and a thunderbird drum song that everyone sang with much gusto. Some of the grade 4 students were given the honour of playing along on her drum. Elder Allison shared information about our school’s bundle which holds the four medicines. She was rather impressed with the artwork that our students had created to decorate this bundle. At the end of each session, students were invited to ask questions that Elder Allison happily answered.

Elder Allison will be returning in April to meet with the other classes of the school. We look forward to seeing and learning from this gentle and wise knowledge keeper!
