 Elective Courses

At Westdale, our students have opportunities that are unique to our amazing building. Along with a rigorous Practical Arts program that includes Foods and Nutrition, Clothing and Textiles, Woodworking, Metals, and Graphics and Design, we offer opportunities in Art, Concert Band, Drama, and Media. Each of these Option courses are described below. Your child will be enrolled in one of these courses. Every attempt will be made to place students in their first choice.

Art: Students will create artwork in a variety of artistic media (i.e., painting, drawing, sculpture, collage, print-making). The building of new skills and techniques in art will be supported by continued practice which includes completing preliminary work in a sketchbook. Students will be exposed to and inspired by historical and contemporary examples of art. They will explore new artistic media, and investigate the principles and elements of art. They will be encouraged to make authentic, personal statements in their own artwork, and respond to artwork by others. Supply Cost: $30.00

Concert Band: Our three-year concert Band program allows for our students to gain experience and knowledge in music. Students in grade 6 will work with the band teacher to choose one of the following instruments: flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, euphonium, or tuba. Instrument rental or purchase is the responsibility of the family. Band activities may include working with professional musicians, performing at school band concerts, visiting local band festival, overnight band trips (varies between grades). Average Cost per Year (including instrument rental): approx.$300-400. Fundraising opportunities are available.

Media: Students will explore a variety of technology-based media. This might include computer applications, student newsletter, website design, videography (including editing). Students will be able to choose an area for their focus. A final project will be in the form of a final product to present to the community.

Drama: Students will cover the concepts of teambuilding/trust, pantomime, improvisation, monologues, character work, memorizing and script work in a safe and supportive environment. Students will build strong interpersonal skills within the activities and tasks that are disguised as fun. Opportunities for performance will be available. Drama is not being offered at this time.
