Dramatic Arts

Welcome to Fort Richmond Collegiate’s Dramatic Arts program! Offering an inclusive and diverse learning experience where students have many opportunities to explore, express, and share their own creativity with others, the Drama program’s many activities have included musical theatre productions (such as Sister Act, High School Musical, and Grease to name a few), Dinner Theatre Evenings, Children’s Play productions for elementary audiences, Improv Theatre shows (including participation in the Canadian Improv Games), Theatre shows of student-written plays, Camp Retreats, and field trips to Toronto to study Improv at the “Second City Improv and Comedy Training Centre.”

At all levels in the Drama program, students will create original pieces and scripts, as well as learn to interpret written theatre scripts and plays. In addition to studying various Dramatic Art forms for storytelling, Drama courses are available at every level for students to learn transferable life skills that the Dramatic Arts teaches: enhanced cultural understandings and communication skills (both in group work and individual work), public speaking, teamwork, leadership, critical thinking, problem-solving, technical, creativity and performance skills. The Drama curriculum aims to develop the whole student both intra-personally (developing greater self-confidence, self-esteem, and self-awareness) and interpersonally (learning to better interact with others and the world around us). 

DRAMA20S

The Dramatic Arts 20S course is a full credit course that introduces students to the art of Drama. Various Dramatic forms of storytelling are taught, along with fundamental Drama and Theatre skills to develop and prepare students for performance presentations. Some of the activities we do are Improvisation, Dance Drama, Music Drama, Theatrical Sword Fighting, Monologues, Scripted Scene Work, and more!

DRAMA30S

A full credit course, the Drama Program at the 30S level will continue to develop intermediate dramatic/theatrical skills (learned in Drama 20S) giving student groups the opportunity to direct, write, act, and produce their own creative projects for performance. Projects include Contemporary Scene work, a Dance Unit, Sketch-Comedy, one-act Thematic Plays, and Children’s Theatre for invited elementary audiences.

DRAMA40S

A full credit course, the focus of the Drama Program at the 40S level is for students to apply their advanced dramatic/theatrical arts skills learned in prior levels, into full-length theatrical play productions/presentations (original and/or scripted). We take on group projects that are student-led and student-driven. It is a lot of fun!

IMP30S/40S

A full credit course, Improvisational Arts 30S introduces students to a variety of improvisational skills and Short Form Improv game structures. Participation is expected in school-related presentations/performances, and include the Canadian Improv Games and/or Manitoba Drama Youth Festival. This course operates during lunch/after-school hours throughout the entire school year. 

A full credit course, Improvisational Arts 40S focuses on enhancing and advancing student improv skills learned in Improv 30S and applying them to Long Form Improv Structures. Participation is expected in school-related presentations/performances, such as the Canadian Improv Games and/or Manitoba Drama Youth Festival. This course operates during lunch/after-school hours throughout the entire school year.
