EAL Resources

Student Specific Planning at Fort Richmond Collegiate

All parents/guardians and students should be informed about their programming.  Below you will find information to tell you specifically what your child is working on in each EAL (English as an Additional Language) course.

Reporting on progress of EAL Students:

Teachers have created an E course plan for students taking “E” (EAL) courses.  Please click on the course link to the right for information on the strategies that are used to support EAL Learners.

What is the benefit of taking an “E” (EAL) Course?

E courses are planned for and delivered in a way that allows the EAL student to fully engage in their learning.  The same curriculum is followed; however, the most important information (essential outcomes) in the course is focused on while also helping the students develop their English language skills (see Domains).  These courses are designed so that the students can find success as they move towards regular programming.

What are the Essential Outcomes?  In each course, the teacher has determined which course outcomes are most important for the student to understand in order to find success in English language acquisition.

What are the EAL Domains?

There are four EAL domains.  EAL Domains:

1. Linguistic Competencies - The knowledge of language and how it is used.

2. Contextual Application - The academic or subject-area learning that is required.

3. Intercultural Competency and Global Citizenship - The ability to see one’s self as a good citizen of the school, the community, the city and the country.

4. Strategic Competencies - The strategies that help the student learn and communicate more effectively.

What should families do if they need an interpreter?

Parents/Guardians are encouraged to meet with the teacher to find out more information about their child’s progress.  If parents/guardians can arrange for a translator, it is very helpful.  If parents/guardians are unable to bring a translator to the meetings, please let the case manager know and a translator will be arranged.
