Red Dress Day is May 5th

On May 5th, students and staff at Fort Richmond Collegiate will mark Red Dress Day, the National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women, Girls, and Two-Spirit people (MMIWG2S). This day honours the lives lost and the families forever changed by this ongoing crisis.

Around the school, students will notice powerful red dress displays. Each dress represents the Woman, Girl, or Two-Spirit person that have been taken from their family and community. The red dresses serve as a visual reminder of the violence Indigenous communities continue to face and the importance of truth, justice, and reconciliation.

This initiative is student-led and aims to spark awareness, reflection, and conversations throughout our school community. We encourage everyone to take a moment on May 5th to honour these lives and consider how we can work together for change.

FRC will also be recognizing the Moose Hide Campaign on May 15th, a grassroots movement to end violence against women and children. The campaign invites all people—but especially men and boys—to take a stand and become part of the solution. By wearing a moose hide pin, individuals commit to honouring and protecting the women and children in their lives and to speaking out against gender-based violence.

We encourage all members of our community to take part in these moments of awareness and action. Together, we can honour those who have been lost and help create a future rooted in respect, safety, and justice.
