FRC Students on the Beamline: Canadian Light Source Synchrotron Research by FRC students
After more than ten months of work, six students from FRC along with one student from Nellie McClung Collegiate travelled to the Canadian Light Source in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan Oct. 20-23, 2023. The Canadian Light Source is the only synchrotron in Canada and our students were selected to run their experiment on "Heavy Metal Biosorption By White Rot Fungi in Aqueous Solutions". After touring the facility and completing their training, students were able to prepare and place their fungi samples into the beamline for analysis. The resulting XRF (X-Ray Fluorescence) data was then analyzed and the students' hypothesis about the ability of the fungus to absorb heavy metals from liquid solution was confirmed. A live stream of the final presentation completed by the students as the culmination of their project is attached. Congratulations to the team for representing FRC and Manitoba so well!
