Kids who Care – Children's Books Celebrate Inclusion and Diversity
The Grade 12 Visual Art Class and the Creative Writing class at FRC have collaborated to create amazing Children’s Story Books with inspiring stories. Inspired by B’nai Brith Canada’s “Diverse Minds” competition – a challenge for high school students to create an original children’s book to teach elementary-school students about diversity and inclusion – Mrs. Oresnik’s Creative Writing class wrote stories and then met with illustrators from Ms. Knight’s Art Classes. These creative teams of authors and illustrators have developed inspiring, thoughtful, sweet, and often funny stories to show young children that being unusual makes you special and interesting.
From a book about a black cat who has difficulty finding friends because of her “bad luck” stigma, to a story about a shy octopus born with only seven arms, to a story about a fox who gets made fun of because he doesn’t act like the other foxes, these stories serve to remind us about kindness, friendship, and the value of human difference.
