Extracurricular
Hello and Welcome to EVW! Our Athletics Program is a busy and fun-filled one, with opportunities available for students at every grade level. No matter the skill level, everyone is welcome to play at EVW.
The PE team is excited to offer many opportunities for participation at EVW. If ever you have any questions about anything, please feel free to contact Leslie Duhamel at lduhamel@pembinatrails.ca. We are happy to answer any questions you may have and will endeavor to get back to you promptly.
Our athletics program philosophy is as follows:
HERE WE WILL…
LEARN AND DEVELOP -participate in game-like scenarios -increase our ability level over the course of a season -better our skills and make smart decisions -be respectful towards players, coaches and referees | COMPETE -set goals and accomplish them -stay focused and mentally tough -be prepared and confident -participate with maximum effort and work hard |
BE SUPPORTED -know we are in a safe space -we will look out for each other -know we can trust our teammates -demonstrate positive attitudes and good sportsmanship - always | BE INCLUDED -no matter one’s ability level, everyone has a place -everyone’s role is important and key to success -everyone gets a chance to participate -care about each other and have each other’s backs |
BE ENGAGED -be focused and ready to learn -participate to the best of our ability 100% of the time -demonstrate good sportsmanship | BE RESILIENT -know we can handle any situation -even if we are down, know we can come back -overcome obstacles in our way as a team |
BUT FIRST AND FOREMOST… WE WILL HAVE FUN!
Participation in athletics contributes to the overall physical, emotional and social well-being of students. We offer many teams and individual sport opportunities ranging from volleyball to basketball to cross country running, track and badminton.
Our Pembina Trails School Beliefs:
Grade 4/5:
-The emphasis needs to be on fair play, sportsmanship and character building
-The programs need to foster the development of positive attitudes.
-All participants play an equal amount of time.
-No game scores are to be kept during team competitions and results from individual competitions will be used to set personal goals for improvement.
Grade 6:
-The fundamental belief at this developmental stage is that all students should be given the opportunity to play.
-It is important to provide students with a transition to higher levels of skill development.
-It is important to promote and encourage the enthusiasm to play sports and to be active as a way of life.
Grade 7/8:
-It is important to increase the quality of the coaching while maintaining a high level of participation.
-Every player should play in every game. The amount of playing time is at the discretion of the coach with the understanding that playing time may be adjusted due to extenuating circumstances.
-Coaches must make players aware of the circumstances that may affect their playing time.
-Students are still developing their skills and need to be given the opportunity to demonstrate the acquisition and application of these skills.
Athletics Communication
Please check the Athletics Calendar regularly. All games, practices and tournaments will be posted there. Your student should come home with a paper copy of the schedule once the season's schedule is determined by the division.
Questions?
If you ever have questions for your coach, please adhere to the 24 hour rule (give it 24 hours prior to reaching out). This provides time to put thoughts together, gain perspective and have productive conversations together. Coaches should not be approached during or directly after the game.
