École Dieppe School commemorates the Battle of Dieppe - Watch the video

The battle of Dieppe was a defining moment for the Allies in World War II. Officially called Operation Jubilee, the mission was designed to test the feasibility of capturing a channel port controlled by German forces.

Of the 6,086 Allied soldiers who landed on the shores of Dieppe in 1942 – many of them from Winnipeg – 3,623 were either killed, captured or wounded within 10 hours. Only 591 Germans were killed or captured.

It was a disaster.

But the lessons learned on that fateful day helped the Allies successfully storm the beaches at Normandy two years later, which ultimately changed the tide of the war in favour of the Allies.

In short, the lessons learned at the Dieppe Raid played a major role in helping the Allies win the Second World War.

On this 80th anniversary of the Dieppe Raid, École Dieppe School is proud to honour the brave and courageous Canadian soldiers who bravely fought for our freedoms and made the ultimate sacrifice.
