MHSAA poll of top volleyball players makes clear how strong the Vincent Massey Trojans boys team really is heading into the AAAA provincials

In a province that is blessed with as much volleyball talent as Manitoba is, it is beyond remarkable what the Vincent Massey boys senior team has accomplished.

Not only are the Trojans undefeated heading into the provincials (Thursday at 6:00 at the U of M’s IGAC), they have four of the top 10 players in the province – as recently revealed by the Manitoba High School Athletic Association’s annual poll of top players in the province.

Owen Weekes was ranked #1 in the province, Keon Torz #2, Everett Smith #3 in Manitoba and Mitchell Strilchuk closes out the list ranked #10.

Having the top three players in the province – and four of the top 10 – from one starting six lineup is something that this province may never see again.

For its small population, Manitoba has an embarrassment of riches when it comes to volleyball, but for one team to play an entire season without losing a match and boasting a squad where 66% of its starting roster comprises the top 10 players in all of Manitoba, is both astonishing and historic.

It’s a tribute not just to the players and their incredible skill level, but also to their coach Marshall Jones and the players’ families for all the training, dedication, support and encouragement that is needed to build so many dominant players on such a powerful team.

Hats off also the Vincent Massey’s Danika Neil, who was ranked #10 in Manitoba in the girls provincial ranking.

To see this history-making Trojans team in action, run – don’t walk – to the U of M this Thursday (November 30th) at 6:00 when the they take on River East in the AAAA provincials semi-final game.
