A Meaningful and Inspiring Visit with David A. Robertson
It was a true privilege to welcome David A. Robertson to École Charleswood School. A celebrated Canadian author from Winnipeg and a two-time recipient of the Governor General's Literary Award, David brought a powerful and meaningful message to our Grade 5–8 students.
During his visit, he shared his personal journey with honesty and courage, speaking about anxiety, resilience, and the importance of understanding our mental health. His reflections offered students not only insight into his own experiences but also practical ways to navigate challenges and support one another. Drawing on ideas from 52 Ways to Reconcile, he also emphasized that reconciliation is not about returning to the past, but about building a more equitable future through thoughtful and consistent actions.
David’s openness created a space where students felt seen, validated, and encouraged. His message helped to break down stigma by acknowledging the realities of anxiety and depression with empathy and authenticity. We were especially proud of our students, who asked thoughtful and respectful questions during the Q&A, demonstrating curiosity, maturity, and care.
It was truly a memorable experience for our entire school community. We are confident that students and staff alike walked away with new learning, a deeper appreciation for the importance of mental health, and a stronger sense of empathy and understanding for the diverse experiences and challenges that shape us all.
