Ribbon skirt and shirt making in Pembina Trails

Teachers in Pembina Trails recently participated in ribbon skirt and shirt making on April 16 and 23, 2026. Ribbon skirts and shirts hold deep cultural significance for many Indigenous peoples and are a powerful symbol of identity.

The teachers who took part were members of our Kiskinohamakewak group - meaning teachers in Ininîmowin (Cree N dialect). Special thanks to Knowledge Keeper Jackie Anderson from Pinaymootang First Nation for sharing her teachings, knowledge and skills, and to Christina Fillion, textiles teacher at PTC, for hosting and facilitating, as well as to our Nîkâniskawak (leaders) team for helping to organize the sessions.

Teachers greatly enjoyed the hands-on experience of making their own ribbon skirts and shirts, and they left with a deeper appreciation of the cultural meaning behind them.
