Vincent Massey varsity boys cap off perfect season with provincial crown
Perfection is not something many teams ever get a chance to even dream about, because in sport you have a 50% chance of losing before the game even begins.
But the Trojans are not like other teams. Heading into the Boston Pizza AAAA provincial volleyball championship final, they had an unblemished 48-0 and record.
Would they make it an astonishing 49-0 in the final match or would the crushing pressure of high expectations – they have been the number one seed in every tournament they’ve played in this season – finally get to them?
Not a chance.
In a statement win that reflected their incredible season, the Trojans swept the Dakota Lancers in three straight games.
Dakota made in interesting in game one. They had momentum and two set points, but the Trojans came from behind to win 28-26 and from that point on their superior skills and teamwork were simply too much for Dakota to handle.
It’s impossible to use too many superlatives to describe the Trojans: Dominant. Overpowering. Relentless. Laser-focused. Unstoppable. Determined.
By going undefeated on their way to the provincial title – the first one in Vincent Massey’s history – they will forever be the benchmark by which all other high school volleyball teams in Manitoba will be measured.
It truly was a season for the ages.
After the Trojans lost a heartbreaker in last year’s semi-final, they made it their mission to win the provincial championship this year.
Owen Weekes, the MVP of the provincials and the number one ranked player in Manitoba, said in a courtside TV interview after the victory that his team “really wanted to win it for our coach.”
Congratulations to the entire team and coaching staff on attaining perfection and winning the AAAA provincial title!
