École St. Avila's entry "Amisk" wins prestigious selection to be a warming hut at The Forks

When The Forks Winter Skating Trails opens in late January 2024, there will be a warming hut with a Pembina Trails flavour. Among all the international winners will be École St. Avila’s winning entry, Amisk.

Amisk is the Cree word for beaver. The Beaver represents wisdom. We want Amisk to help educate. Inside le castor we will have a sacred circle carpet with a big basket of books written and illustrated by Inuit, Metis and Indigenous peoples. Families will be able to sit down, warm up and cuddle with a great book.

We are also making a sign with eight interesting facts about beavers written in French, English, Cree, and Braille. There will also be a bulletin board where visitors can leave some words of wisdom to share with others.
