Learning is for the Birds
Learning is for the Birds
During the past few weeks students have been very busy learning about Manitoba birds in winter. They learned that some birds like Downy Woodpeckers and Blue Jays live in Manitoba all winter. Our students did research about the Black Capped Chickadee as well. Students learned about the physical features of the birds, what they eat, and their enemies. Next, students created a poster with the information they gathered, pictures they drew, and something they liked about the Black Capped Chickadee.
Based on their research, students created their own design for bird feeders to help feed our local birds. They used recycled materials to create their bird feeders. Their design had to keep the snow out, hold the bird seeds, provide access to the seeds for the birds, have a way to hang it, and have something for the birds to stand and rest on. This hands-on application of learning through a STEM challenge had students highly engaged and excited as they created their own bird feeders. Students were problem solving and assisting each other as they made their creations! As you can see in the photos, the bird feeders were creative and functional and provide lots of food for the local bird population!
