Math meets Mamàhtawisiwin with Indigenous Math Network

Last week, Grade 9 math teachers from across Pembina Trails wrapped up the Indigenous Math Network, a first-of-its-kind program that explores how to center Indigenous knowledge in math class in our schools. Grounded in Mamàhtawisiwin, Manitoba’s Indigenous education policy framework, the program explored meaningful ways to embed Indigenous ways of knowing, being, and doing into math classrooms.

Teachers came together for three full-day sessions over the school year, diving into sample lessons and units, co-creating new resources, and sharing experiences of weaving Indigenous teachings into their math practice.

This pilot marks an important first step, with plans to expand these learnings to other grade levels across the division.

Thank you to the Grade 9 math teachers who committed their time and efforts to be part of this inaugural group. A special thank you to Scott Hardman, teacher at Pembina Trails Collegiate, who co-planned and co-led sessions, in addition to creating numerous resources to help move the learning forward.
