Divisional Sports - Grade 5/6

Our school division offers interschool competitions for cross country, flag football, volleyball, basketball, badminton and outdoor track and field. This means students will be playing against teams from other schools and may need to travel to games.

In order to facilitate planning, practices for all Grade 5/6 programs are held at lunch. For volleyball, Ecole Viscount Alexander will host a 5/6 tournament and the divisional Friendship tournament and so transportation will be required to EVA. For other sports, EVW will offer a 5/6 tournament and then EVA will host the divisional tourney.

In addition to divisionally organized sports, EVW also participates in the Athletics Manitoba Indoor Track program.

INTRAMURALS

Students are offered the opportunity to participate in our intramurals lunch time program as of the second week of September. Students sign up on the list posted on the gym door in teams of 8-10 (they make teams with their friends) and a schedule is created and posted in the same location. All games are scheduled during lunch hours from 11:30-12:20pm. Students need to check the schedule regularly as the schedule does change as gym availability changes.

In the past, we have had a variety of sports offered as part of this program. Here is a general idea of what this program has looked like previously.

Sports LEADERSHIP

Students are also offered the opportunity to participate in the PE Sports Leadership program. They are asked to write a paragraph at the beginning of the year detailing why they would make a good leader and submit it by the end of the third week of September.

Students then have the opportunity to learn a variety of leadership skills. Lessons are presented on: communication styles, the importance of paying attention to detail, organization of tourneys and spirit weeks, responsibility.

Students attend a meeting during lunch (11:30-12:10) on the last Thursday of each month in order to sign up for at least one responsibility –refereeing intramurals, score keeping after school, helping with school wide activities, equipment room organising, restocking, etc…

All responsibilities are posted outside of the gym doors on the big white board so students can refer to them at their convenience. Responsibilities are changed monthly and are decided upon at our monthly meetings.

All students from all grades are welcome to participate in this program. However, as leadership positions require responsibility, organisation and dedication, if a member misses three meetings for unexplained reasons, they are asked to try again next year.

Homework

All students in grades 5,6,7,8 are expected to complete 4-5 online quizzes on Edsby each term. They are given one month to complete this task and there are videos to review the concepts taught in class on the Phys Ed Quizzes page of this website. If you are having difficulty accessing Edsby, there are PDF copies of the quizzes on that page as well, in addition to paper copies available from your child's PE teacher.  We are always available to answer questions or help students with these, if needed. All assignments and expectations are discussed in class prior to distribution of each task.
