Identity: An Important Topic in 1/2 Weedon
All year long classrooms at Prairie Sunrise School, formerly Ryerson School, have been hard at work on our divisional What’s in a Name project.
Renee Weedon, a 1/2 teacher, has developed a unit of investigations and learning called Every Name Has a Story. Her 1/2 students have had meaningful conversations surrounding given names, culture, language, and family. Students' names and their origins or stories are proudly hung on the walls.
Most recently, her connection with the self-portraits of famous artist Vincent Van Gogh have got students talking about the important physical details that make each person who they are. “You walk by the room and hear beautiful, positive discussions surrounding facial features and skin colour.” says Meghan Smith a 3/4 teacher.
Up next for the 1/2s: students have begun the practice of mixing shades of paint to create colours and descriptive words that are uniquely “theirs.”
