Want to be part of an educational legacy? Now is your chance. Two future schools in Pembina Trails need names, and we are hoping our community can help.
The new schools, a K-8 and grade 9-12, will be built halfway between Kenaston Boulevard and Waverley Street, on the south side of Bison Drive. Officials tell Pembina Trails that the construction target is to have shovels in the ground in 2020.
To involve as many students, staff and community members as we can, we are launching an online forum where people can submit possible school names. Please take a few minutes to follow the link and share your suggestions. There is also an opportunity to rate the ideas of others. The name our new schools Thoughtexchange closes on October 30, 2019.
“This is an exciting next step in our journey. A school name can become a strong symbol and source of pride for the neighbourhood. Our board believes that community engagement is essential to this process,” shared Jaime Glenat, chair of the board, Pembina Trails School Division.
There are a few things to consider before sharing your suggestion. Pembina Trails is guided, in policy, by meeting at least one of the following criteria when naming a facility:
- The name of the street on which the school faces;
- The historical or current name of the district or community in which the school is located
- A name symbolic of the unique program focus of the school in the case of specialized or alternative schools; or
- The name of a renowned person of historical significance to the Pembina Trails Community, or whose contribution to society is recognized and valued.
While we value community suggestions, it is important to note that our locally elected board will make the final decision.
