School occupational therapists work with school teams and parents/guardians to support students receiving special needs categorical funding and identified as having physical, developmental and learning needs.

Their goal is to help students to function within the school setting to their full potential. School Occupational Therapists work to support students from 5 to 21 years of age and address a variety of issues, including:

  • fine motor, perceptual motor and visual perceptual skills 
  • sensory integration and processing needs 
  • feeding, including students who are at-risk for choking 
  • self-care and personal hygiene skills (dressing, transfers, toileting, etc.) 
  • environmental access including in the classroom, school, work site and family homes 
  • specialized equipment needs including wheelchairs, desks, seating and positioning devices, writing tools and sensory devices 
  • technology needs including hardware, software, access and adaptive equipment
