How did école St. Avila get its name?

Our school name dates to the establishment at the beginning of the 20th century of a rural facility along Pembina Highway called St. Avila School (vicinity of Kirkbridge Drive). The name, St. Avila District No. 1359 was given to two buildings which were known as St. Avila West at Lot 116 east of Pembina Highway and St. Avila East in King's Park. St. Avila West became a storage facility for the Fort Garry School Division and St. Avila East retained the name St. Avila School. The original school was built in 1964. The two-story area where the art room and music room are located were added on in 1968. The library and surrounding classes were added in the early 1970's.

The school name honours a member of the clergy whose name was Alphonse-Avila.  During the Crusades, Alphonse de Castille conquered Avila for the Christians. In his honour, many Catholic sons were given the name Alphonse-Avila. One of these was Father Alphonse-Avila Cherrier who came to Manitoba from Québec in 1878. Father Cherrier (1849-1935) was involved in the Manitoba School Question and well known in St. Norbert as the executor of Father Ritchot's estate.  He was a member of the Catholic Board of Education until 1890.

ATTENDANCE / STUDENT ABSENCE / LATES / ILLNESS

Regulations of the Department of Education require all students to attend school regularly except in cases where illness or other similar cause makes absence unavoidable.

Parents are asked to notify the office at 269-5677 should their son/daughter be ill and/or away.  An answering machine is available to take your calls when the office is closed.

Students are not to leave the school grounds during the day without the expressed written permission of the parent/guardian, the Principal and/or Designate.

STUDENT ABSENCE

Please telephone the office and advise the secretary when your child is going to be absent.  There is a call back system and the secretary will contact parents if a child is absent and there has been no information from the parent.  It is useful for the teacher to have a note of explanation of the absence.

STUDENT LATE

A student arriving after regular class time should report to their teacher and then check in at the office.  Otherwise the secretary may assume absence and make a telephone call to the parents.

STUDENT ILLNESS OR ACCIDENT DURING THE DAY

We try to contact parents as quickly as possible and it is important that our records of telephone numbers are up to date.  Please keep us informed of work contact numbers or emergency alternatives for this purpose.  The emergency contact you have noted on your registration should be a responsible adult, living in close proximity to the school, who is available during school hours.

PLEASE DO NOT SEND NOTES TO SCHOOL REQUESTING THAT CHILDREN STAY INSIDE AT RECESS.
Children who are unwell should not be in school.

Teachers MAY NOT DISPENSE DRUGS.  Children in need of medication during school hours must have special arrangements made for them through the school office.  Please contact the secretary for details.

STUDENT ENTRY

Generally, students will wait outside until admitted by their teacher.

Inclement weather: On extremely cold days, students will be allowed into the school upon their arrival and proceed to their classrooms.

When the wind chill factor is 1750, recesses will be held indoors.  Environment Canada is monitored on a daily basis.

STUDENT PROGRESS

Home and school communication is essential throughout the year.  Questions about how your child is progressing in school should be directed to the teacher. If you have concerns about your child's progress, please don't wait until written report times. Telephone and set up a meeting time.

Reports will be sent home in early December and June.  Written reports on kindergarten students are sent home in June only. Parents are encouraged to attend parent-teacher-student conferences which are usually scheduled in February (tri-conference) and April (celebration of learning)

BICYCLES

Occasionally bicycles are stolen out of school yards.  It is risky to leave a bike outside a school all day.  Risk is minimized if the bike is securely locked to the bike rack.  Under no circumstance will students be allowed to play on or near the bike racks during recesses.

Skateboards, skates, roller skates, and roller blades are not to be taken to school.  In rare instances (ie. skates) have been requested by the Physical Education Instructor.  These requests will always be in writing.
