INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS: SEEKING

Things to think about

  • Using more than one source of information will give you a clearer understanding.
  • Consider getting information from a variety of sources. What sources are there for you to use?
  1. Artifacts
  2. Books
  3. Computer/CD Rom
  4. Graphs, charts, tables
  5. Encyclopedia
  6. Internet
  7. Magazines
  8. Newspapers
  9. People
  10. Video/Audio sources
  • Choosing the right key words simplifies searching for information in print and electronic sources.
  • Use a broad term (ex. disease) to search or do the opposite by using a precise narrow term (ex. "Lyme disease") to see which gives you the preferred information.
  • Sometimes you will have more success using the singular form of a word rather than the plural form(ex. "dog" rather than "dogs")
  • On the Internet, use more than one search engine to make your queries. Did the use of different search engines give you the same results?
  • Pick a few recommended search tools and stick with them. You will come to appreciate their special capabilities.
