INFORMATION LITERACY SKILLS:
SEEKING
Things to think about
- Using more than one source of information will give
you a clearer understanding.
- Consider getting information from a variety of
sources. What sources are there for you to use?
- Artifacts
- Books
- Computer/CD Rom
- Graphs, charts, tables
- Encyclopedia
- Internet
- Magazines
- Newspapers
- People
- Video/Audio sources
- Choosing the right key words simplifies searching for
information in print and electronic sources.
- Use a broad term (ex. disease) to search or do the
opposite by using a precise narrow term (ex. "Lyme
disease") to see which gives you the preferred
information.
- Sometimes you will have more success using the
singular form of a word rather than the plural form(ex.
"dog" rather than "dogs")
- On the Internet, use more than one search engine to
make your queries. Did the use of different search
engines give you the same results?
- Pick a few recommended search tools and stick with
them. You will come to appreciate their special
capabilities.
