Student Entry
Two supervising
teachers will be on playground duty between 8:35 - 8:50 a.m., recesses
and 12:40 - 12:55 p.m. Students are strongly discouraged from arriving
at school at times when supervision is not scheduled.
All doors, with the
exception of the main front entrance, will remain locked all day.
Students arriving late and parents arriving to pick up a child will need
to enter through the front door.
Student Lates
A student arriving
after regular class time should report to the office upon arrival and
obtain a late slip. Otherwise the secretary may assume absence and
make a telephone call to the parents.
Student Absences

Please call the
school office if your child is going to be absent or late. Office hours
are 8:15 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Please leave a message on the answering
machine if it is more convenient for you to call before 8:15 a.m. or
after 4:15 p.m.
Safe Arrival Program
- Call Backs
The Safe
Arrival/Call Back program is an effort to ensure that students who have
left for school have arrived safely. If a student is absent and the
parent or guardian has not called the school, we will call home or work
to determine that the child's absence is known and that he/she is safe.
Please call us. This saves a great deal of time and worry by all.
Student Illness or
Accident During the Day

We try to contact
parents as quickly as possible; thus it is important that our records of
telephone numbers are up to date. Please keep us informed of work
contact numbers or emergency alternatives for this purpose. The
emergency contact you have noted on your registration should be a
responsible adult, living in close proximity to the school, who is
available during the school hours. Please do not send notes to school
requesting that children stay inside at recess. Children who are unwell
should not be in school.
Lunch Procedures
a)
Dismissal/Activities
Students will be
dismissed promptly at 11:45. Those remaining for lunch are to walk with
their classmates and teacher to the lunch areas. The student needs to
take outdoor clothing and all lunch items with him/her. All students
will remain seated for a minimum of 20 minutes to facilitate a relaxed
eating time. The supervisors present will then instruct students
regarding clean up and other activities and dismiss them accordingly.
All students will be requested to clear their lunch items and area prior
to dismissal. Students staying for lunch must remain on the school
grounds during the lunch hour. A note or phonecall to the office is
required if alternate plans are made for lunch. Normal school
expectations for behaviour will apply.
Patrol Times on Post

8:35 -
8:50 11:45 - 11:55 12:45 -
12:55 3:45 - 3:55
School Patrols are
on post at Chancellor and Markham, Chancellor and Augusta and at the
parking lot.
Students are to
cross the streets only at points where patrols are located and should
wait to be directed to cross by the patrols. Loitering at patrol posts
is discouraged as is engaging patrols in unnecessary conversation.
In the course of the
school year, all Grade 4, 5, and 6 students will be trained and serve as
school safety patrols. They are to report to the patrol room at their
assigned times regardless of weather conditions awaiting further
instructions. Please refer to cold weather policy below.
Bicycles
Although bike racks
are provided, students bring their bikes at their own risk. All
bicycles should be locked. Because the number of bike racks is limited,
students living close to Chancellor are encouraged to walk, leaving the
rack spaces for students who have a long distance to travel to school.
Bus and Bus Safety

At all times when
students ride the bus, on field trips or to and from school, the buses
are considered extensions of the classroom. Expectations for behaviour
and safety while riding the bus are the same as those of the classroom
and playground.
Students are under
the supervision of the bus driver and/or the accompanying teacher.
Emergency evacuation procedures will be rehearsed twice yearly.
Lost and Found
The lost and found
boxes are located under the display case at the front entrance.
Classrooms of younger children also have a lost and found box near their
classroom. These are available for children and parents to check at any
time. To ease identification, please label clothing and other
possessions with the student’s name inside the garments and footwear.
Students are
discouraged from bringing valuables or money to school as these may be
easily lost or mislaid.
Fire Drill and
Emergency Exits/Procedures

We shall practice
emergency exits. A copy of the exit routes and procedures is located in
each teaching area. Students must exit quickly and quietly. We need to
be certain that everyone is clear of the building and that anyone
needing help can be heard and receive help quickly.
Pets
There are children
registered in school who are allergic to animals and birds. Please do
not bring pets to school unless special arrangements have been made with
the teacher for a specific reason.
Cold Weather Policy

When the windchill
reaches -27 degrees, students will remain indoors during recess,
lunchtime and while waiting for the school bus. The safety patrols are
on duty for a shortened time. At -35 the safety patrols do not go out on
duty. Regardless of the weather, children should always come dressed to
go outdoors. Should an emergency occur and evacuation of the school
become necessary, even a short walk to safety can result in severe
frostbite at these temperatures. When the temperature reaches -45 the
school buses are cancelled and will remain cancelled for that day.
Please listen to the radio for bus cancellations.
Emergency Closing of
School
A decision to close
the school due to severe snowstorms or other emergencies will be made by
the Superintendent or the Chairperson of the Board. Radio stations will
be called and will announce school closures. Once the school is in
session, it will remain open until parents or guardians can collect
students.
Student Progress

Home and school
communication is essential throughout the year. Questions about how
your child is progressing in school should be directed to the teacher.
If you do have concerns about your child’s progress, please don’t wait
until written report times. Please call and set up a meeting time.
Reports will be sent
home in December, March and June. Parents are encouraged to attend
parent-teacher conferences which are usually scheduled to follow the
reporting periods in December and March.
Report cards are
distributed to parents three times a year, usually in December, March
and June. The report card envelope should be returned to the school
after report cards are distributed in December and March and may be kept
at the end of the year . In June a copy of the report card will be
placed in your child's school file.
Assemblies
Assemblies will be
regularly scheduled. Please note the dates published on the calendar
and in the newsletter. Parents, guardians and community members are
welcome to attend.
Recesses and
Playground Guidelines
After arriving at
school, students are to remain on the school grounds. Supervising
teachers must be able to easily see all students.
The number of
children playing on the equipment at one time is limited due to the size
of the structure. Students are taught in physical education classes how
to use the playground apparatus in a safe manner. Teachers also give
frequent reminders about playground safety. The daily schedule is as
follows:
Day 1 - Grade 1 and
Grade 4
Day 2 - Grade 2 and
Grade 5
Day 3 - Grade 3 and
Grade 6 (Kindergarten spring term)
Day 4 - Grade 4 and
Grade 1
Day 5 - Grade 5 and
Grade 2
Day 6 - Grade 6 and
Grade 3 (Kindergarten spring term)
Student Dress

All students are to
have a pair of indoor shoes at school and are to change after entering
and before leaving the building. These shoes may be the runners
required for gym classes. This procedure will help us ensure that dust,
mud, and wet shoes are limited to a small entry area, leaving classroom
workspaces clean for student learning activities. Please avoid
black-soled runners for gym use. Hats should not be worn in school.
Children with T-shirts with inappropriate or offensive logos will be
asked to change clothing or remove the offensive item.
Monthly Newsletter
A newsletter will be
sent home with the youngest/only child of each family, usually on
the first school day of each month. A monthly calendar of events is
included outlining clubs and activities and special events for each
grade Please visit our school website @ www.pembinatrails.ca/chancellor
for our newsletter and other school information.
Visitors to the
School
In the interest of
safety, parents or other visitors must report to the office to inform us
of your presence and obtain a volunteer/visitor tag. A volunteer
sign-in book is across from the office for those helping in classrooms.
